Hello! Apa kabar? (How are you?!)
Let me tell you about our recent meeting – Meeting #311. Because…
Meeting #311 felt as if the children are left by the parents to look after the house. Why? Most of key members are hard at work at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, getting ready for the Toastmasters International Convention 2014.
Despite having 8 members who are approximately 4,117km away from Perth, our CVTM’s weekly meeting operates as usual. Here at CVTM, we have our first time Toastmaster of the night, Saliya, to open Meeting #311 to the 24 members and guests at the meeting. Yes, there were 2+4 24 people present at the meeting!
And here’s a brief summary for the evening: Vivian started off with an inspiration to tell us how technology has shaped the world and how kids learn these days. Toni filled our appetite with a couple of questions during food table topics for various occasion, from Josh talking about romantic dinner to Lily telling us about the delicious Szechuan dishes.
Specials of the night are the three speeches by Angela, Chandana and Edward. Angela persuade us to learn Chinese or a new language. Learning a new language is like everything else. It may be hard in the first few months or years, but once you overcome it, you will gradually master the art. Three tips to keep in mind: 1) Don’t give up early, and you know why you shouldn’t. 2) Be curious! 3) Ask the people around you for help. Chandana then told us to put the theory we learnt at school into practice in order to master the skill. Toastmasters is a great place to put your speaking or leadership theory into practice too. 😉 And last but not least, a CC10 speech by Edward, telling us to do the one thing that we need to do – Focus. He also told us to avoid:
- Multitasking no matter how talented you are,
- Distraction because you will get your work done,
- Trying to balance your life. Put more time to family because you will never see your 5 years old kid will never be the same in 5 years time.
- Being the ‘yes’ man.
- Having the excuse of “getting big is hard”. Mastering anything is hard if you don’t focus.
P.S: Vivian’s published her first Newsletter for CVTM. It is now available online. Check it out here.
